Shelter

Requirements vary with the animals and campground facilities. Ask the land manager what must be stored, where it belongs and whether approved containers are needed. Do not assume that a cooler, a closed tent or a parked vehicle satisfies the local rules.

Organize by storage job

A backpack, stuff sacks and folded rain jacket.
Packed & ready

Keep the items that need protected storage together so you can put them away promptly. Include food preparation supplies, rubbish and any scented personal items covered by the rules. Keep the storage instructions with the reservation details.

Shelter
  • Finish food preparation and collect scraps.
  • Clean the table and cooking area.
  • Put food, rubbish and other required items into the approved arrangement.
  • Check that the storage is secured correctly.
  • Make sure every member of the group knows the routine.

Observe without changing the animal’s day

Leave No Trace advises watching wildlife from a distance and avoiding feeding. Follow posted viewing distances and ranger advice. Do not move closer because an animal appears calm or approach young animals. If wildlife comes into camp, give it space and follow local staff guidance.
