Comfort depends on the combination of shelter, sleeping pad, bedding and clothing. Read how the manufacturer describes the temperature rating: a limit rating is not a promise of a comfortable night. The pad also insulates you from the ground, so a thick-looking air bed is not automatically suitable for cold conditions.

Try it for an evening at home

Lie on the pad in your usual sleeping position. Check whether your hips or shoulders meet the ground and whether the pillow height feels right. Inflate air-filled equipment early enough to notice a leak. Adjust a new setup before the trip instead of learning every detail at bedtime.

Worth remembering

Shelter, insulation and dry bedding work together.

Keep the bedtime routine familiar

Store bedding away from damp surfaces. Set aside dry sleep clothes and keep tomorrow’s warm layer handy. A familiar pillow, eye mask or book can be worth its space in the car. Plan bathroom visits and a clear, lit exit before everyone settles in.
