Knots & practical skills

Sheet bend: join two lengths of cord

A useful joining knot to practise with two clearly different cord colours.

Camping equipment arranged on an outdoor table.

Choose a practice setup

A coil of cord, tent stakes and mallet.
Cord & camp fixings

A sheet bend joins two ropes and can accommodate different sizes. Start with two soft, easy-to-see cords and no load. Avoid very short pieces that leave little room to handle the tails.

Trace the sequence

A green tent, poles and tent pegs.
Shelter
  1. Fold the thicker cord into a U-shaped bend.
  2. Pass the thinner cord through the bend.
  3. Take it around both legs of the thicker cord.
  4. Tuck it beneath its own standing section and dress the knot.

Animated Knots notes that both tails should finish on the same side. Leave adequate tails; the short ends in a demonstration are chosen for visibility, not as a working-length recommendation.

Know the limits

This is a practice guide for ordinary camp tasks. Do not use it as instruction for life-support systems or critical loads. Different cord materials and movement can change how a knot behaves.
