A packing list for a weekend at camp

The essentials for a comfortable two-night camp, without packing the whole house.

Getting ready

This list is a starting point for an established campground reached by car. Change it for the forecast, local rules, your group and the facilities on site. A sleeping bag, insulating sleeping pad and suitable tent matter more than an elaborate camp kitchen.

Make five small groups

A battery lantern and headlamp.
After dark
  • Shelter: tent, poles, pegs, rainfly and a compatible footprint if used.
  • Sleep: sleeping bag or bedding, sleeping pad and pillow.
  • Kitchen: stove and suitable fuel, lighter, pot, mugs, utensils, washing supplies and rubbish bags.
  • Clothing: layers, rain protection, spare socks and comfortable footwear.
  • Personal essentials: drinking water, food, medicines, first-aid supplies, headlamp and charging cable.

Worth remembering

A repeatable kit means less to remember next time.

Pack the car in arrival order

A backpack, stuff sacks and folded rain jacket.
Packed & ready

Keep the tent, lights and weather layers accessible. Put fragile food and items that must remain dry in suitable containers. Do a final walk around the house for chilled food, medication and charging devices. After the trip, record one thing you missed and one thing you never used.
