Shelter & sleep

Choosing a tent: space, weather and setup

Read the floor plan, understand the fly, and choose a shelter you can put up without a struggle.

Shelter

For a campsite beside the car, packed weight is usually less important than a workable interior and a manageable setup. A tent carried several miles needs a different compromise. Write down which kind of trip you actually take most often before comparing equipment.

Shelter

REI explains that a tent’s person rating is largely a sleeping-capacity measure, not a guarantee of room for bags, pets or changing clothes. Floor dimensions and wall slope are more useful than the name on the bag. Check peak height, door placement and covered storage as well as floor area.

Worth remembering

Shelter, insulation and dry bedding work together.

Inspect the weather details

Shelter

A suitable rainfly, ventilation and correct pitching all matter. A four-season label describes a tent designed for tougher conditions; it does not automatically make it the more comfortable choice for mild-weather camping. Match the shelter to the conditions you intend to use it in, and follow the maker’s limits.

Do a five-minute fit exercise

  1. Mark the advertised floor dimensions on a room floor with removable tape.
  2. Lay out your actual pads or mattress, allowing for tapered walls.
  3. Add the space needed for a clear exit and the items that must stay inside.
  4. Check the packed tent fits your storage space and vehicle.
  5. Ask whether you can comfortably complete the pitching steps alone.

Choose the compromise deliberately

Common questions

Should I automatically size up?

Try your actual layout first. Extra room is useful only if the tent still fits the pitch, your storage space and your setup routine.
