Start with an easy place

For a first trip, choose a staffed or established campground with the facilities you want. Check the actual site details: drinking water, toilets, parking distance, quiet hours, pet rules and check-in time. A campsite close to home makes a one-night practice trip much easier to adjust.
Do a small rehearsal

Pitch the tent at home and check the poles, pegs and rainfly. Inflate your sleeping pad and leave it inflated long enough to notice a leak. Try your stove outdoors according to its instructions. Put your light, warm layer and rain jacket where you can reach them before unpacking everything.

Keep the first hour at camp simple.
Keep the first evening gentle

Plan to arrive well before sunset. Set up shelter and beds first, then sort out food and water. Choose a familiar meal and bring a ready-to-eat backup. A short wander around the campground is plenty for day one; you do not need a packed itinerary to have a good trip.
