Load it with a plan

Chill ingredients before they go into the cooler. Use enough ice or frozen packs and a cooler thermometer to check that perishable food stays at 40°F / 4°C or below. Put raw meat in leakproof packaging, separated from foods you will eat without cooking.
Make the next meal easy to reach

Group each meal’s ingredients together so the lid can close quickly. Keep the cooler shaded and follow local wildlife-storage requirements. A separate drinks container can reduce rummaging through the food. Label containers with their meal so someone else can find them too.

Plan the cleanup when you plan the meal.
Know when to discard food

USDA guidance limits perishable food out of refrigeration to two hours, or one hour when the air temperature is above 90°F / 32°C. Track time and temperature; appearance or smell cannot establish that food is safe. When the storage history is uncertain, discard it.
