Weather & safety

Before dark: an evening camp checklist

A short evening reset so you can enjoy the last light instead of searching for a torch.

Use daylight for the fiddly jobs

A folded map, compass and small daypack.
Maps & walking

Sunset is a useful reminder, but shade, cloud and terrain can make a campsite feel dark earlier. Set a reminder for about an hour before sunset and move it earlier if your plans need more time. Check pegs and guylines without walking over your neighbours’ space.

Make a little night station

A backpack, stuff sacks and folded rain jacket.
Packed & ready

Choose one predictable place for your headlamp, warm layer, shoes, drinking water and anything you may need during the night. Keep a clear route out of the tent. A dim light is more comfortable around camp than an unnecessarily bright lantern shining into nearby tents.

Worth remembering

Check the forecast for the place you will actually camp.

Close down the kitchen

An unlit camp stove, cooking pot, mug and spoon.

Finish washing and water collection while you can see. Follow local rules for food, scented items, waste and wastewater. Check the next few hours of weather while you have a connection. Make sure everyone knows the campsite location and the evening plan.
