Organic Maps is a free, open-source option with downloadable maps and offline navigation. Use its official instructions for your device. An ordinary webpage or map screenshot does not provide all the functions of a downloaded map.

Prepare more than the campsite pin

A folded map, compass and small daypack.
Maps & walking

Cover the drive into the area, the campground, intended walks and sensible alternatives. Save the campground entrance separately from the pitch if the two are far apart. Add the car park, meeting place and any confirmed facilities you expect to use.

Save the camp location before you set off.

Do a connection-free rehearsal

  1. Complete the map downloads and check available storage.
  2. Enable airplane mode and reopen the mapping tool.
  3. Find your saved places and zoom into the intended route.
  4. Check what route information and directions remain available.
  5. Restore your normal connection settings afterwards.

Carry another way to understand the place

A printed official campground or trail map can remain useful if the phone is damaged. Check current closures with the land manager. A line on a map does not establish permission, safe passage or current trail condition.
