Make your own oat packets

A backpack, stuff sacks and folded rain jacket.
Packed & ready

For each person, start with the portion of oats recommended on the packet and adjust for appetite. Add cinnamon or other dry seasoning. Pack dried fruit, seeds or nuts separately so everyone can choose their own toppings. Check dietary needs and allergies before combining ingredients.

Keep the cooking simple

Heat water outdoors using equipment as instructed. Cook the oats with the quantity of liquid and time on the packet; instant and rolled oats behave differently. Stir, allow hot food to cool to a comfortable temperature and add toppings at the table.

Put mugs, spoons and breakfast ingredients together inside the food-storage arrangement required by the campground. Leave the pot clean and drinking water ready. Carry a no-cook option such as fruit and a suitable shelf-stable breakfast for a morning when cooking is inconvenient.
